State Senator Dan Moody proudly represents the constituents of the 56th District which is located in northern Fulton County and includes Roswell and Mountain Park along with large portions of Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton and Sandy Springs. Senator Moody, a Republican, was first elected to the State Senate in 2002 and has quickly become a state leader on many issues that affect his district including improving education and expanding economic opportunity.
The Senator currently serves as Chairman of the Appropriations’ Education Subcommittee, Secretary of the Insurance & Labor Committee, and is a member the powerful Rules Committee which determines the legislation that advances to the Senate floor for debate. He also serves on the Regulated Industries & Utilities Committee, the Education & Youth Committee, the Committee on Assignments, and the Administrative Affairs Committee.
During his time in the legislature, Moody was appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue to serve on the Southern Regional Education Board Legislative Advisory Council and received the support of Lt. Governor Casey Cagle as he ascended the leadership ranks. Most recently, Senator Moody was selected by his peers to serve as Chairman of the Senate Majority Caucus.
Moody’s tireless efforts to create a better state government have not gone unnoticed. He was presented with Georgia Municipal Association’s coveted “Champion of Georgia Cities” award in 2004. Governor Perdue recognized him as the 2005 “Legislator of the Year”. And in 2006, the Georgia Association of Homes and Services for Children named him “Legislator of the Year” for improving educational opportunities for foster children. Senator Moody is also a member of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government Advisory Board which is recognized throughout the world as an outstanding resource on governance.
Senator Moody’s experience prior to his public service allows him to bring a unique and valuable perspective to the Georgia General Assembly. An electrical engineer by trade and retired Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, he is a trained problem solver with well honed leadership skills. Moody is also the former owner of an established business in Forsyth County that provides products and services throughout the world.
Dan and his wife, Stephanie, have been married 38 years, and have three children and six grandchildren. They attend Mount Pisgah Methodist Church. Their family has been active in a wide variety of community service activities including Parent-Teacher Associations, governmental ad hoc committees, neighborhood property owners’ associations, and charitable foundations. Currently Mrs. Moody serves on the Atlanta-Fulton County Library Board of Trustees as well as its Library Foundation as well as the Newtown Park Foundation. She is also the president of her neighborhood association and the past chairman of the Legislative Spouse Committee.
Military Officer
Before Dan Moody was elected to serve his constituents in the State Senate, he served his country as an officer in the United States Army Reserves. During his service in the military, Moody learned the true meaning of duty and honor. He was trained to be disciplined in his life and committed to a cause greater than himself. Dan also developed the effective leadership style that would serve him well in the development of his business and in his public service.
Problem Solver
Dan has always been a problem solver. While working as an electrical engineer, he learned how to systematically approach complex problems and work towards practical solutions. Now Moody applies those well honed skills to the emerging issues facing our state. He first asks the important question, “Is this the role of state government?” If so, Dan finds the best way to resolve the issue without creating undo government interference or unnecessary bureaucracy.
Business Owner
Small businesses are the backbone of Georgia’s economy and create a majority of the jobs in our state. As a former successful small business owner himself, Dan knows firsthand the issues that these businesses face. He understands when state government policy is being a help or a hindrance to growth and prosperity. Moody’s business experience also gives him the ability to apply free-market principles and proven private sector solutions to state government problems.
Senate Leader
In just six years of public service, Senator Moody has become a leader among leaders. After serving as a freshman senator, he was entrusted with the chairmanship of the Education and Youth Committee. Moody quickly became viewed as an expert on education policy and received numerous honors for his efforts. His reputation as a dedicated and knowledgeable leader earned him positions on the powerful Rules and Appropriations committees. Along the way, Dan gained the respect of his peers which led to his election as Senate Majority Caucus Chairman.
