Sen. Moody appointed to new education working group by Governor
5/27/2008
In an ongoing effort to make Georgia one of the best states in the country for public education, State Senator Dan Moody has been appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue to participate in a working group that will review the findings of the Tough Choices or Tough Times report. The report was completed by the New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce, which was chaired by Dr. Charles Knapp, former president of the University of Georgia.
“It’s an honor that my work in the area of education continues to be recognized by my peers in the legislature, as well as our state leaders like Governor Perdue and Lieutenant Governor Cagle,” said Senator Moody as his appointment was announced. “I have always felt to succeed and prosper in the future, Georgia’s education system must change and adapt to today’s environment. Consequently, I look forward to studying the findings of this report closely, and coming up with some recommendations for our state.”
In late 2006, the New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce released its report, concluding that the U.S. is continuing to lose the education race in the new global economy. To confront this crisis head-on, the bipartisan commission, comprised of former Cabinet secretaries, governors, college presidents and business, civic and labor leaders, called for a total shakeup in how America educates children with an innovative system that boosts students to new levels of learning throughout their lives, while creating a structure that could give them the best teachers and schools the country can offer. The report also lays out the framework for a complete overhaul of the American system of education by the year 2021.
“I think if we approach this with an open mind, and take a serious look at some of the recommendations, our children and our schools will only benefit,” Senator Moody added. “One of the reasons we run for public office is to have an opportunity such as this to help make the changes and improvements necessary to push the next generation of Americans toward success.”
