Senator Moody to chair Education Funding Study Committee
6/27/2008
Senator Dan Moody has been appointed chairman of the Senate Education Funding Mechanisms Review Study Committee by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle. The study panel will meet this summer to take a comprehensive look at the way Georgia’s system of public education is funded and could recommend new legislation for the 2009 session.
“Senator Moody will lead the Education Funding Study with strength as chairman,” said Lt. Gov. Cagle. “He is dedicated to his constituents and has worked diligently in the Senate. I look forward to seeing the results this study panel produces for our state.”
Created by Senate Resolution 1213, the Education Funding Mechanisms Review Study Committee will examine the Quality Basic Education (QBE) funding formula, which has been the mechanism for state funding of Georgia’s public schools since 1985. Due to the complex nature of these funding mechanisms, including the QBE formula, capital outlay, equalization grants and more, the study panel will conduct a periodic review to see that they are meeting the current needs of Georgia’s schools and students.
“As the former Senate Education chairman, Senator Moody has shown that he’s very knowledgeable when it comes to the way education is funded in our state,” added President Pro Tem Eric Johnson (R-Savannah). “He has a solid track record in the Senate, and I am confident that he will be an asset to this important study.”
The Senate Education Funding Mechanisms Review Study Committee will be chaired by Senator Moody, and includes Senators Johnson, Dan Weber (R-Dunwoody), Jack Hill (R-Reidsville) and David Adelman (D-Atlanta). The Committee will make a report of its findings, with proposals for any new legislation by December 31, 2008.
